Strength Training
Build strength, support your spine, and promote bone health through weightlifting for scoliosis.
Strength training, customized for you.
FOR SCOLIOSIS/KYPHOSIS
The American College of Sports Medicine recommends strength training all major muscle groups at least 2 times per week. Individuals with scoliosis are not exempt from this – in fact, strength training is imperative when managing a complex musculoskeletal condition like scoliosis. Strong muscles support the bends and twists in the spine, and sturdy hip and leg muscles provide the foundation of the spinal column.
Our clients who incorporate regular strength training report less pain, increased function, and better quality of life on their SRS-22 patient questionnaire (an outcome measure designed by the Scoliosis Research Society to measure health-related quality of life in patients with idiopathic scoliosis).
FOR OSTEOPENIA/OSTEOPOROSIS
For those who may not have scoliosis or kyphosis but do have low bone mass (Osteopenia and Osteoporosis), strength training is one of the best ways to maintain bone and, in some cases, rebuild it. The mechanical stress that lifting weights places on bones stimulates bone-building cells called Osteoblasts. These cells can make the skeleton thicker and harder, thus lowering one’s fracture risk.
For anyone new to weightlifting, welcome! We aim to make weightlifting approachable and un-intimidating. We place a high value on teaching every client about healthy biomechanics (i.e., form) while lifting. We stock our clinics with the lightest and heaviest weights, and everything in between. There are strength-training activities for all abilities and ages, and we look forward to customizing a program that’s perfectly tailored to you.
